HoloLens is Microsoft’s Mixed Reality head-mounted display and computer. The main development challenges included the integration of various sensors with the display and computer; maintaining extremely tight tolerances due to the sensitivity of human vision; and ensuring human factors and ergonomic requirements were met.
One principle task in the HoloLens development was maintaining a cohesive interface between engineering and industrial design. Specifically, taking information from the science and engineering teams, converting it into a several possible architectures, evaluating these with the industrial design team, and then circling back to inform engineering. Reproducing this process loop in many iterations enabled us to integrate the complexity of the HoloLens into a product that can be worn on the head and made it the first self-contained Mixed Reality Computer.
